Painting Choices: Urethanes, Enamels and Watercolors
Here at Car Body Guard we are specialists in car paints and car paint repairs. We will talk our customers through the best choices for their vehicle and what options are the most cost effective whilst maintaining a great finish for years to come. We have a vast knowledge into the many different car paints available and will always use the best quality products.
There are three options when it comes to that choice—urethanes, enamels, and watercolors. We have chosen the latter of those options for a few reasons. One, it is better for the environment. Unlike the urethanes and enamels that require a special disposal process, we can simply let the paint sit out for a couple of days and throw it away into the regular trash. This is a significant difference because the watercolors are not toxic to the environment since they are not solvents. Second, watercolors are better for the health of our technicians since they are not cancer-causing. Third, car manufactures now use a water based color system; so we can better match our coloring to that of the original auto color.
Matching the original manufacturer color is a process of following recipes. Each manufacturer has a particular color combination to make the final color for each individual car. The possibilities are endless just like mixing with any colors. We use four coats of colored watercolor paint and two coats of clear color. The color coats usually take ten minutes to dry, while the clear coats usually take closer to an hour. However, the main variables are the temperature and humidity. If it is a rainy day, the coats take longer to dry. Meanwhile, if the temperature is hot, the coats’ drying time is less.
The painting occurs in a painting booth, and we currently have two. We used to only have one, but we decided to expand to two booths to better serve you—our clients. They are simply rooms with much ventilation and extra space so that are technicians can move around to paint each piece of the auto with precision.
